It was founded in 1967, in Rockford, Illinois, by Thomas A. Nelson, the "TAN" standing as a monogram for Mr. Nelson's initials. Following financial problems which led to bankruptcy, TAN was acquired by Saint Benedict Press (LLC) in 2008.〔(Saint Benedict Press )〕 Since its acquisition, "TAN Books and Publishers" was renamed "TAN Books", as a division of Saint Benedict Press, and the "TAN" has been reformulated to (presently) stand for "Tuum Adoremus Nomen" (Latin for "Let us Adore Thy Name"). The company has aimed to improve the quality of its products by commissioning new book covers and employing more durable book construction.
